Two films inspired this series: « The Ice Storm » (1997) directed by Ang Lee and Andrew Niccol’s « Gattaca » (1997). Both these films deal with the process of building (or unraveling) one’s identity. The first does this through a teenager’s observation and experience of human relationships inside as well as outside family, the second through genetic manipulation – the word « Gattaca » is made of the initials ACGT that identify DNA basis. The presence of nature is either a regenerative or a destructive force. It is mineral in « Gattaca » whereas more earth-like in « The Ice Storm ». The use of architecture plays a structuring and mirroring part.
I have used the same repetitive modules in the « Ligatures » series that I already had in the small-sized works of the « Ties » series. This series can include photographs of architectural elements – for instance « Mon cœur bat toujours aussi fort » includes the photograph of one of the red Folies from the Parc de la Villette in Paris, designed in 1970 by B. Tschumi.
